Meet The Team.. Why did I become involved in NPFG?

David Johnson - Co-Chair
I have a 18 year old daughter who is a Down girl also is Hypo active and showing signs of ADHD. I first became involved in the local Down Group becoming a trustee. Found that allot of the issues raised were to do with the local government departments. Looked for ways to express my views and those of others that I had been talking with. Found out about NPFG and went along to see if this was what I was looking for, it was. Now involved in the forum and go to various work streams.

Amy Bevingham - Co-Chair
I became a NPFG steering group member to be a voice and advocate for my daughter who is aged 3 with Non-Verbal Autism. After diagnosis everything seemed uncertain, overwhelming and challenging. From speech and language therapy, to applying for her Education Health Care Plan and specialist school place. With NPFG I am a part of a like-minded volunteer parent group of children with Special Educational Needs, who together communicate with local providers about any gaps or problems in services that can impact on our children.

Anna Norris - Secretary
My son Nicholas was born prematurely at 30 weeks and at the age of 2.5 he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy - Spastic Diplegia, which affects his legs. Once we overcame the grieving period, we focused our energy on research and networking. I benefited from SCOPE's Face-2-Face Befriending Training and enjoyed volunteering as a parent befriender for several years before I was introduced to NPFG. At first I admit it was  peer pressure to get involved as I wasn't sure if this was for me but 5 years later, I am passionate about improving the lives of disabled children and the forum plays quite a big part in my life.

Once Nicholas started school I wanted to go back to work but finding flexible and meaningful work has proven difficult - becoming the secretary for the forum seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Over time I took on more responsibilities, have grown in my role as secretary and became regional co-chair for the East Midlands.

I enjoy working as a team, putting my organisational skills into practise and learning new things in an area of personal interest to me. I have benefited from fantastic training opportunities and have since overcome my fear of social media and public speaking. I love the varied work, uitilising self-motivation and initiative daily, but also being flexible and in charge of my workload. In 2015 Nicholas had a major operation recovering at home, NPFG has given me the opportunity and support keeping my sanity by working alongside my caring role.

It is a pleasure to see the forum grow from strength to strength and I feel proud of the many steps we have taken to achieve positive change.
