Family Stories and Case Studies

Being the parent or carer of a disabled child can be rewarding, challenging, exhausting, difficult, overwhelming, complicated all in one day. Here some parents - Sonia, Christine, Victoria, Carol and Linda - tell us how things are for them and their families.

We also hear from Taylor who is 14 and has cerebral palsy quadriplegia about the challenges of getting out and about and finding places to socialise.

Sonia's Story...

I got involved because I wanted to 'shake up' services

Sonia is married to Alistair and has two sons Samuel aged 12 and Oscar 8. After moving to Northampton in December 2000 when Samuel was a toddler, she was aware that Samuel was not developing as he should. She experienced social situations with Samuel as being very stressful as he seemed to be a clingy child and wanted to be with her at all times.

When Oscar was born, Sonia soon realised that she wasn’t a neurotic mother (something she felt some health professionals thought) but there were indeed some issues with Samuel. A diagnosis of Autism followed just before his fifth birthday

Sonia's Story..

Over the last 3 years Sonia has been involved with parent participation in implementing the Aiming High for Disabled Children strategy. Sonia explained that she wanted to ‘shake up’ services not just for her children and family but for the wider community.

Sibling support is an area Sonia feels particularly strongly about and she is involved in the local initiative Action for Children. This project helps siblings and the family deal with the conflict of interests that having a child with additional needs can often have.
