Post 19 Provisions Expressions of Interest and Ideas

The NPFG have been asked by School Head Teachers to circulate the information below to our parents/carers for their feedback on Post 19 Provisions..

The Secondary Special School Headteachers are concerned about the opportunities for our students once they leave school at the end of Year 13

Our evidence shows that across the county few students move onto courses which build on the skills and experiences they have had in school and a significant number drop out, due to lack of stimulus or enjoyment.

Very few students move onto an "employability" route, even though, we believe many are capable of doing so.

WHICH SCHOOLS ARE INVOLVED?
Billing Brook Special Academy
Daventry Hills
Friars
lsebrook
Northgate
Wren Spinney
Other secondary special schools are interested in the development at a later stage

WHAT WOULD THE SCHOOLS LIKE TO DO?
We believe that many of our students are capable of further developing their skills:

Our more complex learners - independence and autonomy, leisure etc

The vast majority of our students: Supported Internships and/or Employability Programmes

However they need to have an EHCP naming the school until 19.

This would enable schools to apply for funding, and for those seeking employment funding through Access to Work to ensure they can be appropriately supported into adulthood.

WHY?
We believe our students deserve more opportunities and that the schools, with their expertise are in an excellent place to develop such provision.

Want to ensure that there is an appropriate, and full, range of provision providing the specialist support for all students, especially understanding particular cohorts

Nationally there are a number of schools who have already been supported by their LA in developing this to meet the needs of our special needs communities.

FUTURE OPTIONS - WHAT DO YOU WANT?
We are asking parents to identify what they would like in an ideal world - we know it is not possible to develop completely new provision, but we do believe that our students deserve more.

What do you want?
As a group we are meeting with the Local Authority - Alison Shipley, to discuss our proposal to develop joint provision for our students post 19.

We will take your ideas and views to the meeting to support our next steps

If the LA agree that there is a need and a gap in the local offer, we hope they will support us in applying to the EFA for recognition to develop future provision.

If the LA do not agree, then we will not be able to develop the provision, as our funding stream is based on their agreement

If we do not get support, the Special Schools are intending to campaign regarding the current EHCP's ceasing at 18 within our schools, which we believe prevents students from achieving employability opportunities.
